News > Migrant Hawker Dragonflies >
Just a hundred years ago the only sightings of this dragonfly were of migrants arriving from the continent (hence the name). Maybe it's time to give it a new name. Nowadays it's a resident species, found in many parts of England and Wales.
It's also one of the last dragonflies on the wing each year, sometimes seen flying in late October. It's a real sun worshipper too. When resting it often hangs vertically from leaves and stems in order to catch as much sunshine as possible, and warm up the whole of its body.
