Latin name: Henricia sanguinolenta

Size: Up to 20cm across.

Distribution:
Found around the coast of Scotland and the north east coast of England.

Months seen: All year round.

Habitat: Rocky areas.

Food: Mussels, oysters and other shellfish.

Special features: The colour of this particular species can vary from purple to red. The arms are often tipped in white.

In order to feed the starfish turns it's stomach outside of its mouth and inserts it into its prey. The gastric membrane then digests the victim.

Starfish have the ability to regenerate lost limbs.
