Scientific name: Gallinula chloropus
Size: Grow to around 30cm in length
Distribution: Found throughout the UK
Months seen: All year round
Habitat: Ponds, lakes, rivers, canals and reservoirs. Often seen walking beside water on grassy banks
Food: Aquatic plants and insects
Special features: Moorhens have a red bill with a yellow tip and the toes and legs are a greenish-yellow. The plumage is black with a narrow white line along the sides and white feathers below the tail. Juveniles are greyish-brown with a brown bill.
Moorhens tend to jerk their heads back and forth as they walk or move across water.
