One insect that's sure to make an appearance this month is the Mayfly. These insects (along with dragonflies) belong to the Palaeoptera, the most primitive group of winged insects which lack the ability to fold their wings back along the abdomen.
These insects were once known as 'Dayflies' because many of them only survive for twenty four hours. Their mouthparts are non-functional, because they don't have time to eat. The sole purpose of the adult stage is to mate and lay eggs. They have a weak, dainty flight which consists mainly of rising up and then dropping down again.
Mayflies are always found close to water, and some species are a good indicator of water quality because they are so sensitive to pollutants.
