Green Orb-weaver

Despite its exotic colouring the Green orb Weaver is a surprisingly common species which can be found throughout the UK.  Very few people have actually seen one of these spiders because they are so well camouflaged in their natural green habitat.  They're also only around 5 to 6mm in length and can easily be mistaken for a leaf bud.

At this time of year you might see one moving around looking for a a place to build one of their characteristic webs.  By looking around the webs in low bushes, or low vegetation, you can sometimes spot the spider lurking at the edges.

If you look at the end of the spiders abdomen you'll notice a red spot.  Judging by the many emails we receive the bright colours of these spiders seem to be a cause of concern for a lot of people.  Despite what the media might say, not every spider with a red marking is a "deadly black widow".  These spiders are totally harmless.
