News > Brimstone Butterflies >
On sunny days this month look out for the bright yellow Brimstone butterfly. It's usually the first butterfly on the wing each year and an indicator that spring is here.
It's widely believed that the word "butterfly" may have originated from this species on account of its "butter" coloured wings. The name Brimstone comes from the element called brimstone (sulphur) which is bright yellow, just like the butterfly.
Only the males are a deep yellow colour. The females are a paler, more apple-white colour.
