Walnut Orb-weavers usually sleep all day, hidden in tiny crevices. You might possibly find one on the outside walls of your house or around your garden shed. Check around your garden clothes line where they often make their webs.
After dark they emerge to feed on the creatures which got trapped in their webs during the daytime. They have a distinctive a shiny, pill-shaped abdomen featuring an oak leaf pattern. This is one spider which remains active all year round, although most of the time it manages to go unnoticed.
