Although many species of fungi prefer the warm, damp conditions of autumn, the Jew's Ear Fungus seems to enjoy the cold January temperatures. It can even survive being frozen solid.
As you can see this tough little fungus really does resemble a human ear, or maybe an ear from a character in Lord of the Rings or Star Trek. At this time of year this fungi starts to develop new growths.
