It may seem a bit chilly for frogs to be feeling frisky, but records show that frogs in the UK can start mating as early as Christmas day.
More usually the first sightings of frogspawn are around the middle of January. Much of this early spawn fails to develop because sharp frosts freeze it solid. Only about 1 in 1,000 eggs will survive to become a mature adult frog. Fortunately frogs can lay up to 2000 eggs each to cope with these losses.
