This is the time when ash tree buds begin to erupt into life. When the buds first open it appears as if some freaky little blackberries are about to emerge, but after a few days the flowers, with their purple tips fully emerge.
There's an old country saying which goes "oak -choke, ash - splash". It means that if the oak tree comes into leaf before the ash, then dry dusty weather will follow, and if the ash tree comes into leaf before the oak, then plenty of wet weather can be be expected.
