Snake  Smooth Snake



Latin name:
Coronella austriaca

Size: Can grow to 70cm in length, but usually shorter.

Distribution: Rare. Found in southern England - mainly in Dorset, Surrey and Hampshire.

Months seen: May to October.

Food: Small mammals and reptiles.

Habitat: Heathland and sand dunes.

Special features: The Smooth snake is one of the rarest animals in the UK. The body is grey or brown with a series of darker markings along its length. The top of the head has a dark, heart-shaped marking. On each side of the head there is a dark strip running from the nose to the eye and continuing back along the neck. The belly is generally lighter in colour. It can be grey through to yellow.
