Rare Bird Sightings
July 2005

UK Safari Tip:
Need help identifying birds? One of the best field guides is the "Collins Bird Guide" - available through the Amazon bookshop -  click here

It's quite unusual for the Lesser spotted woodpecker to visit a garden feeder. More usually it's the less shy Great Spotted Woodpecker. In this case it's both!

The photo was taken by Roger Jones from East Sussex. It's quite a rare situation, and it gives a good idea of the size difference between the two species. The lesser spotted woodpecker is at the bottom.
