White-Tailed Eagle Chick - Photo © Copyright 2003 Iain Erskine
White-Tailed Eagle Chick by Iain Erskine

This photo of a White-tailed Eagle chick on the nest was sent in by Iain Erskine who works as a Police Sergeant on the Isle of Mull. Iain explained how he got the shot...

"We have a big problem with egg thieves, particularly in relation to White Tailed Sea Eagles, so we work closely with RSPB, SNH, Forest Enterprise and the local Community to protect the birds."

"The pics were taken at the birds' tagging at Loch Frisa on Mull. I used a Canon EOS 10D with a Sigma 50-500mm EX HSM lens. Although the chick on the nest looks as if it wants to get me, it was trying to get the RSPB officer who was bringing it down for tagging. I was quite a distance away. The biggest problem was trying to focus through the spider's web of branches."

"The pics have been well used and have appeared in a lot of publications including; The Times, Country Life and National Geographic's web sites. I wanted to use the pics to draw attention to the risk that these birds are at from egg thieves."
