Long-Tailed Tit Nest Building
by Bob Ball

I first spotted one of the Longtails gathering cobwebs from underneath a bench seat at the side of a footpath. It flew off into a patch of brambles nearby so I wandered over to investigate.

I stood a reasonable distance away waiting for any further activity. Then I spotted one in a hawthorn bush gathering old tangled cobwebs. It returned to the brambles and very cooperatively posed for a shot before descending out of sight, deep into the large bramble patch.

I never saw the completed nest. Getting closer may have upset them and in any case was unnecessary with a long lens. I had all the shots I could have wished for at a unthreatening distance.
