Latin name: Carduelis cannabina

Size: Approximately 14cm

Distribution: Found in most of the UK except northern Scotland.

Months seen: All year round.

Habitat: Heathland with gorse thickets.

Food: Seeds and insects.

Special features: The linnet has a grey bill and brown plumage on the back.

The male linnet (shown above) has a grey head and crimson coloured breast and crown. The underparts are off white streaked brownIn autumn the bright red colouring fades.

The female has brown head plumage and pale coloured underparts streaked brown and grey.
