UK Safari Tip:
A great way to see all the details on these insects and other small creatures is with a special magnifier box - click here

Glow-worms can be found in most parts of the UK, although as our recent survey shows, they appear to be more common in the south than in the north.

It's worth checking out any area of grass, especially areas with chalky soils, which have not been fertilised or treated with pesticides.

Last years successful glow-worm hunters frequently reported seeing them close to water, especially along canal paths and river banks. Other hot spots include; gardens, disused railway embankments (don't go near any active railway lines), meadows, churchyards, woodlands (especially rides and woodland edges) and roadside verges.
