UK Safari Tip:
Need help identifying wild flowers? Checkout the ID chart called "Woodland Plants" in the Nature Shop - click here

Latin name: Narcissus pseudonarcissus

Size: Grow to a height of around 30cms.

Distribution: Found in large numbers in the Blackdown Hills of Somerset, Farndale in Yorkshire, Abbey Wood in London and the Teign Valley in Devon. They are rare in Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Flowering months: From late February through to April.

Habitat: Open woodlands, heaths and meadows.

Special features: Sometimes called 'Lent lilies', true wild daffodils have disappeared from many areas through over collection by gardeners. Drainage schemes have added to their decline.

The central trumpet of the drooping yellow flowers is as long as the outer ray petals. The outer petals are paler in colour than the trumpet.

Wild daffodils were made famous by William Wordsworth's Lakeland poem, in which he described the "host of golden daffodils" he saw growing on the banks of Ullswater. They can still be viewed at this same spot.
