Colt's-foot - Photo © Copyright 2000 Gary Bradley
Photo: G. Bradley

Latin name: Tussilago farfara

Size: Grows to a height of around 20cms.

Distribution: Found throughout the UK.

Flowering months: March to April.

Habitat: Bare patches of ground, such as the edges of roads and footpaths.

Special features: Colts-foot is an early spring flowering plant. The bright yellow flowers of the colts-foot open up before the leaves have appeared. The flower stems are covered with overlapping succulent scales.

It is the leaves which give this plant its name, because they are shaped like a hoof print.
