UK Safari Tip:
Need help identifying birds? One of the best field guides is the "Collins Bird Guide" - available through the Amazon bookshop -  click here

Latin name: Panurus biarmicus

Size: Approximately 16cm

Distribution: Found mainly in the south and east of England.

Months seen: All year round.

Habitat: Reed beds.

Food: Insects and seeds.

Special features: The males have a grey head and a distinctive black moustache, as well as black plumage under the tail. The females have a brown head and lack the black plumage.

Bearded reedlings (or 'beardies' as they are often called) were formally known as bearded tits. In fact they belong to the Asian family of 'parrotbills', and have only recently been reclassified.
