Poplar Kittens

Latin name: Furcula bifida (Brahm)

Size: Wingspan approx 40mm

Distribution: Found mostly in England and parts of Wales.  Scarce in Northern Ireland and absent in Scotland

Months seen: May to July

Habitat: Parks, gardens and woodland

Food: Poplar, aspen and willow

Special features: Poplar Kitten moths is an off white coloured moth with an orange-brown band across the forewings and black dots around the wing borders. The thorax has tiger-like orange, brown and black markings.  The male has feathered antennae.

The caterpillars of poplar kitten moths grow to around 38mm in length. They have a bright green body with a brown saddle. The pair of claspers at the back of the body are developed into whip-like extensions. Poplar kitten caterpillars feed mainly on the leaves of poplar trees (hence the name).
