Slow worms

Slow-worms mate between April and June, and the young are usually born from late July through to Septem
ber.  The females are ovoviviparous, which is a big word meaning that the eggs hatch inside the mothers body.

It's rare for the eggs to be laid before they hatch.  The young usually come out of their mothers already wriggling. They're a beautiful golden colour, and are able to fend for themselves from birth.

If you want to attract slow worms to your garden get yourself an open compost heap. Make sure there are plenty of branches at the base, laid in a criss-cross pattern to create plenty of hidey-holes. Then pile on any prunings from the garden, vegetable peelings etc.

The heat generated in the compost will attract all sorts of creepy-crawlies, which in turn will attract the slow-worms in to feed.
