Scientific name: Pyrgus malvae
Size: Wingspan approx 28mm
Distribution: Found in parts of England and Wales
Months seen: May to June. Occasional second broods emerge in August
Habitat: Sunny woodland rides, wasteground and downland
Food: Nectar. The caterpillars feed on cinquefoil, agrimony, wild strawberry and blackberry.
Special features: Grizzled Skippers can be distinguished from other similar butterflies by the chequered black-and-white pattern and the row of white square patches around the outer edge of the hind wing.
The caterpillars are purple-brown colour on the top, and green below.
