Hazel catkins in February

If there was an award for the most optimistic tree it would have to go to the Hazel.  Back in November, when all the other trees were shutting down for the winter, just hoping to survive the months ahead, the Hazel had already made preparations for the coming spring.

Back then short greenish-brown catkins could be seen all over its branches.  In February those catkins start opening up to release their pollen, and if you look carefully you can see the tiny little red flowers ready to receive it.
