Slow-worms generally mate between March and June, and the young are born from late July to September.  Slow-worms produce eggs like other reptiles, but the Slow-worm is 'ovoviviparous'.  This means that the eggs hatch as soon as they are laid or within a few minutes.

The outside of the egg has just a thin, fragile membrane rather than a leathery case or shell.  The baby slow-worms are a beautiful golden colour, and are able to fend for themselves straight away.
