The fragile little Wood Anemones begin flowering in March. These attractive plants often grow in profusion, carpeting the ground beneath the woodland trees with their delicate white blooms.
Their drooping flowers respond almost immediately to sunshine by 'looking' up to the sky and opening fully. The flowers follow the path of the sun, tilting from east to west through the day. If a cloud passes over they close up and droop down again.
Another common name for this plant is 'thunderbolt'. Superstitious folk believe that picking the flowers can bring on a thunderstorm, and that the picker will be struck by lightning.
